Why Chairfirst exists.
Enterprise software solved workflow, data, and analytics. It did not solve institutional authority — who is authorized to make the consequential call, and how that call gets coordinated and recorded across systems. Chairfirst is what an operator built to address that gap, at the moment abundant intelligence made it urgent.
The thesis
Intelligence is becoming abundant; institutional effectiveness is not. The moment agents and people can commit consequential action, the constraint stops being whether something can be done and becomes who may decide, commit, and execute — under what authority, across the enterprise.
Why the name
The chair comes first.
In every institution, the chair is the symbol of human authority — the seat from which consequential decisions are made and owned. Intelligence is now becoming abundant, and machines are beginning to act. In that world, human authority matters more, not less. Chairfirst keeps the chair first.
The founder
John E. Hancock has spent four decades inside operationally complex institutions — since 1985, starting at Boeing. He watched enterprise software solve everything except the thing that actually governs institutional performance: who is authorized to make the consequential call. Chairfirst is the company he built to address that gap.
In addition to Chairfirst, Hancock manages the Bacaro technology estate and its related advisory activities.
Where we are
Honest about the stage.
- A working platform — one live deployment at a multi-unit restaurant operator, running labour and production decision families.
- ~$600K of founder-funded R&D invested, and roughly a year of code built on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
- Measurement is in progress. No measured operating-line result yet.
How we operate
- Governed, not autonomous — AI recommends; a human with the right authority decides.
- Honest by default — we state the stage plainly; no fabricated customers, logos, or certifications.
- We replace nothing — we compose with the identity, credential, and system-of-record platforms our customers already run.
